Martin E. Gilmore

Martin E. Gilmore is a Partner and the Office Managing Partner of Perkins Coie's Austin office, where he focuses on intellectual property litigation, particularly in patent, trademark, and trade secret disputes. His practice spans a diverse range of sophisticated technical fields, including semiconductor design, server technology, streaming video, smartphones, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, digital signal processing, digital cameras, media systems, wireless communications and networking, voice recognition systems, and website design tools. His background includes bachelor's degrees in biomedical and electrical engineering and a master's degree in electrical engineering, which inform his counsel across electro-mechanical, biological, and chemical technologies.

Throughout his career, Mr. Gilmore primarily represents defendants, focusing on defending operating companies against patent infringement claims. His experience includes successfully obtaining dismissals of patent infringement suits and defending clients' patents in post-grant review proceedings. He joined Perkins Coie in January 2016, having previously been senior counsel at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.

Mr. Gilmore's notable engagements include representing Hisense Company Ltd. as a defendant in Light Guide Innovations, LLC v. Hisense Company Ltd., et al., a case involving patents related to LED backlight units used in televisions. He has also been counsel in patent infringement lawsuits for clients such as Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon, where he secured motions to dismiss. Additionally, he assisted in obtaining a judgment as a matter of law of non-infringement for a leading smartphone manufacturer after a jury trial, a verdict recognized among the top defense wins in California in 2012. He is experienced in PTAB/IPR proceedings, having defended patents in post-grant reviews, and his client Hisense has filed an IPR against Light Guide Innovations LLC.

Mr. Gilmore earned his J.D., cum laude, from Fordham University School of Law in 2007. He holds an M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering (2005) and a B.E. in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering, cum laude (1999), both from Vanderbilt University. He is recognized as a New York Intellectual Property Litigation Lawyer with 18 years of experience.
