Laurie N. Stempler

Laurie N. Stempler is a Special Counsel in the Litigation Group at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, focusing her practice on intellectual property and patent matters. Her experience spans a diverse range of technologies, including computer architecture, web applications, medical devices, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and mobile phone hardware and software. While she represents clients in both offensive and defensive litigation, notable successes highlight her work on behalf of plaintiffs.

Ms. Stempler was a key member of the trial team that secured an $82.5 million jury verdict for IBM in 2018. More recently, she was part of the team that achieved a $634 million patent infringement jury verdict for Masimo against Apple. She was also involved in the "Robot Wars" global IP dispute, where Sullivan & Cromwell secured a settlement for their client Ocado Group plc. In Centripetal Networks, Inc. v. Keysight Technologies, Inc. et al., Ms. Stempler represented the plaintiff, Centripetal Networks, in appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit concerning decisions from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). In these related appeals, the Federal Circuit affirmed PTAB decisions finding various claims of Centripetal's patents unpatentable.

Her experience includes significant involvement in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the PTAB, as evidenced by her representation in the Federal Circuit appeals originating from IPR decisions. Ms. Stempler was admitted to practice in New York in 2010, having earned her law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 2009.
