Laurie Edelstein

Laurie J. Edelstein is a seasoned litigator whose practice includes patent litigation, notably involving foundational web-design technology. While her broader practice encompasses complex commercial litigation, energy, antitrust, and white-collar defense, her recorded patent litigation experience centers on software-related intellectual property disputes. Despite initial tracking indicating a defendant-side role for her sole listed patent case, court filings and firm announcements confirm that Ms. Edelstein, while at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, represented the plaintiff, Express Mobile, Inc., in the case of Express Mobile, Inc. v. Adobe Inc. et al. She is currently a partner in the San Francisco office of Jenner & Block, which she joined in June 2021 from Steptoe & Johnson LLP.

A highlight of her patent litigation career involves the Express Mobile litigation, where her former firm, Steptoe & Johnson, secured significant victories for their client, Express Mobile, Inc. In an infringement case against GoDaddy.com, the Federal Circuit reversed a district court's summary judgment of non-infringement concerning patents foundational to modern web-design. This was followed by a landmark $170 million jury verdict for Express Mobile against GoDaddy.com, finding willful infringement of U.S. Patent Nos. 6,546,397 and 7,594,168.

Ms. Edelstein also has experience with Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings. In the Express Mobile matter, a $170 million jury verdict for the client led to a subsequent major PTAB victory. The PTAB, in a first-of-its-kind decision, relied on the jury's determination of no invalidity to uphold the patentability of challenged claims, delivering another decisive win for Express Mobile in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings.

Ms. Edelstein earned her JD from Yale Law School and an M.Phil. from Yale University. She completed her undergraduate studies at Stanford University, receiving an AB, Phi Beta Kappa, and the President's Award for Academic Excellence. She is admitted to practice in California and New York.
