Lana S. Shiferman

Lana S. Shiferman is a partner in Goodwin Procter LLP's Intellectual Property Litigation practice, where she focuses on patent litigation from pre-litigation counseling through trial and appeal. Her practice encompasses a broad range of technologies, including digital rights management, semiconductor manufacturing, networking and cybersecurity, telecommunications, and a variety of life sciences and medical device innovations such as immunoassay devices and pharmaceutical products. Shiferman is recognized as a Lawdragon 500 Leading Global IP Lawyer.

Shiferman regularly represents both patent owners and patent defendants in federal courts nationwide and before the International Trade Commission. Her experience includes successful outcomes for both sides, such as securing a $308.5 million jury verdict for Personalized Media Communications against Apple Inc. for patent infringement (though the patent was later found unenforceable on appeal due to prosecution laches), and obtaining a jury verdict of non-infringement for Citrix in a case seeking over $50 million in damages. She also achieved summary judgment of invalidity for Sophos in a patent infringement case. Her tracked case appearances include representing Personalized Media Communications, LLC as plaintiff and Google LLC as defendant, further underscoring her balanced practice.

A significant aspect of Shiferman's practice involves the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where she handles inter partes reviews (IPRs) and reexamination proceedings. Notably, she was involved in the appeal of a PTAB decision in the Personalized Media Communications v. Apple case, successfully persuading the Federal Circuit to reverse the PTAB's initial finding of unpatentability.

Shiferman earned her B.S. from Northeastern University in 1996 (magna cum laude) and her J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law in 1999 (magna cum laude). She is admitted to practice before several U.S. Courts of Appeals, including the Federal Circuit, and numerous U.S. District Courts.
