L. Rex Sears

L. Rex Sears, Ph.D., is a Partner at Maschoff Brennan, where he focuses on complex intellectual property disputes, including patent litigation. His practice encompasses a broad range of technology-intensive fields, such as computer hardware and software, payment system security, pharmaceuticals, exercise equipment, networking and wireless technology, semiconductors, and telecommunications. He also handles matters involving trade secret, trademark, trade dress, and copyright law.

Sears primarily represents defendants, as evidenced by his lead counsel role for the defendant in Wapp Tech Limited Partnership et al. v. Micro Focus International, PLC. His firm, Maschoff Brennan, frequently represents innovative companies in various IP litigation contexts.

His experience extends to post-issuance proceedings and inter partes conflicts before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and appeals from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) to the Federal Circuit. Sears is admitted to practice in state and federal courts in Utah, California, and New Mexico, as well as the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Ninth, Tenth, and Federal Circuits. He earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Chicago, and holds a Ph.D. and A.M. from Harvard University, along with M.S. and B.S. degrees from the University of Utah.
