Kyle E. Friesen

Kyle E. Friesen is a patent litigation attorney with a practice focused on defending clients in intellectual property disputes. He is currently Senior Counsel at Heim, Payne & Chorush, LLP, having joined the firm on June 30, 2025. Prior to this, he practiced at firms including Mayer Brown LLP and Shook Hardy & Bacon LLP.

Mr. Friesen's technical expertise spans a wide range of technologies, including semiconductors, medical devices, telecommunications, imaging, and electronics. His case experience also includes mechanical engineering, manufacturing, transportation, e-commerce, computer architecture, and software. He primarily represents defendants, as evidenced by his appearances in three tracked cases as defense counsel and none on the plaintiff side. His work includes disputes before federal district courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

His experience includes defending patent rights in inter partes review (IPR) and other post-grant proceedings since the PTAB's inception in 2012. Notable tracked cases where he served as backup counsel include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited v. Advanced Integrated Circuit Process LLC and Unified Patents v. Advanced Integrated Circuit Process LLC, both involving IPR proceedings concerning semiconductor technology. He also advises clients on intellectual property matters impacting business transactions, such as potential infringement and invalidity issues, and commercial contracts.

Mr. Friesen earned his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 2008, following a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Texas in 2003. He is admitted to practice in the State of Texas, before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and in several federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.
