Keyonn L. Pope

Keyonn L. Pope is a seasoned patent litigator and a leader of the Intellectual Property Practice Team at Riley Safer Holmes & Cancila LLP, where he joined as an equity partner in August 2021. Prior to this, he was a partner at Reed Smith LLP for nearly nine years, focusing on intellectual property litigation and counseling. His educational background includes a B.S.E.E., cum laude, from Southern University and A&M College in 2004, and a J.D. in 2009 from the University of Illinois Chicago, John Marshall Law School, which is now part of the University of Illinois Chicago. He is admitted to practice in Illinois, Indiana, and the District of Columbia, as well as before the United States Supreme Court of Illinois and several U.S. District Courts.

With a deep technical foundation as an electrical engineer, Mr. Pope specializes in complex technology disputes, encompassing areas such as collaborative software, file synchronization, gaming systems, and AI-driven retail analytics. His practice largely involves defending operating companies against patent infringement allegations. Notable representations include defending Box, Inc. in a significant patent infringement suit concerning collaborative software, and Nintendo in a patent matter related to its Wii gaming system. He also served as lead counsel for Lowe's Companies, Inc. in Alpha Modus, Corp. v. Lowe's Companies, Inc. et al., a case involving patents for AI retail technology, which settled in March 2026.

Mr. Pope's experience extends to navigating proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where he has handled inter partes review (IPR) petitions. He is recognized for his ability to clearly and persuasively explain complicated technical subjects, a skill valued by clients in bet-the-company litigation. In addition to his patent litigation work, he advises clients on trademark, copyright, trade secret, and data privacy matters.
