Kevin Duffy

Kevin Duffy is an Of Counsel in the Patent group at Dorsey & Whitney LLP, based in Denver. He rejoined the firm in January 2026, having previously been with King & Spalding.

Mr. Duffy specializes in patent law with a strong focus on mechanical, energy, nuclear, and electrical technologies, leveraging his background as a mechanical engineer. His practice encompasses a wide range of intellectual property transactions, including patent and trademark licensing, software licensing, technology transaction agreements, and joint development agreements. He also has extensive experience in patent preparation and prosecution, assisting clients with identifying and protecting patent rights, analyzing competitive landscapes, and developing strategic patent portfolio management plans.

In his litigation practice, Mr. Duffy primarily defends operating companies, as exemplified by his representation of Terumo BCT, Inc. in Haemonetics Corporation v. Terumo BCT, Inc. This case involves patent infringement allegations related to plasmapheresis collection systems, where his client denies infringement and challenges patent validity. The matter has also involved related proceedings at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), with Terumo BCT initiating Post-Grant Reviews (PGR) and Inter Partes Reviews (IPR) against Haemonetics, indicating Mr. Duffy's experience with PTAB proceedings from the defense perspective.

Mr. Duffy earned his J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law, an M.B.A. from California State University-Bakersfield, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. He was recognized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2019 for his pro bono patent service.
