Kelly D. Stephens

Kelly D. Stephens is an experienced attorney with a patent litigation practice that draws on a background in intellectual property disputes and commercial litigation. He is a partner at Stephens Juren, PLLC, a Houston-based firm which also handles personal injury matters.

Mr. Stephens has extensive experience in patent infringement matters, having participated in numerous federal jury trials involving technologies such as oilfield tools, industrial processes, engineering systems, computer hardware and software, and business methods. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in patent disputes, though his tracked appearances currently reflect a defense-side role.

A notable case in his practice is United Services Automobile Association v. Auto Telematics Ltd., where he served as backup counsel on the defense side. This case involved a vehicle telematics patent dispute and saw activity before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) through Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings, leading to an appeal to the Federal Circuit that was ultimately dismissed following a settlement. This demonstrates his involvement in cases navigating PTAB proceedings.

Mr. Stephens earned his B.S. in Ocean Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1979 and his J.D. from South Texas College of Law in 1985. He is admitted to practice in Texas, before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
