Joshua R. Rich

Joshua R. Rich is a patent litigator with extensive experience across diverse technology areas, notably in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device sectors. His practice also encompasses telecommunications, computer code, graphical user interfaces, and advising on intellectual property issues related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). While his tracked appearances include plaintiff-side representation, his broader experience suggests he works for both patentees and defendants, having secured favorable outcomes for clients enforcing patents and successfully defending against infringement claims.

Mr. Rich is currently a partner at Lippes Mathias LLP, based in Chicago, where he joined in September 2025. Prior to this, he was a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP for nearly two decades, where he also served as the firm's general counsel. A notable case includes representing Genzyme Corporation as lead counsel in Genzyme Corporation v. Novartis Gene Therapies, Inc., a high-stakes Delaware district court case involving six patents on recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector technology, which concluded in a mutual dismissal with prejudice. His representative matters also include obtaining summary judgment of patent infringement leading to favorable settlements, securing preliminary injunctions for plaintiffs, and achieving summary judgment of noninfringement and invalidity for defendants.

He frequently appears before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, handling inter partes review (IPR), reexamination, and interference proceedings. Mr. Rich is admitted to practice in California and Illinois, as well as before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and various federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1994 and holds a B.S. and B.A., cum laude, from the University of Maryland (1991).
