Joshua Griswold

Joshua Griswold is a Principal and the Dallas office managing principal at Fish & Richardson, where he has practiced for over 20 years. His practice is comprehensive, encompassing patent litigation in U.S. district courts and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), as well as strategic counseling, patent procurement, and IP licensing.

Griswold brings a deep technical background as a former mechanical engineer, with extensive experience across mechanical, electrical, and software innovations. His focus areas include oilfield technology (drilling, completion, and production equipment), electrical control systems, wireless telemetry, sensor-based controls, semiconductor manufacturing, and enterprise software. In his tracked litigation, he served as lead counsel for the defendant in Greenthread, LLC v. STMicroelectronics, Inc., aligning with his defense-side preference in district court patent disputes.

His PTAB experience is particularly robust, reflecting appearances as counsel for both petitioners and patent owners. He is a key member of Fish & Richardson's post-grant practice group, which has been highly active at the PTAB. Notably, he represented Patent Owner Greenthread, LLC, in various inter partes review (IPR) proceedings (e.g., IPR2023-01244, Semiconductor Components Industries, LLC d/b/a ON Semiconductor v. Greenthread, LLC) where he defended Greenthread's semiconductor patents against challenges by petitioners like ON Semiconductor and Texas Instruments. These IPRs led to a stay of related district court litigation, a significant procedural outcome for a defendant in patent cases. He has also represented petitioners in IPRs, such as The Chamberlain Group, LLC, and Par-Kan Company, LLC, in challenges against other patents. Griswold also leads the Technology Committee of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board Bar Association.

Griswold earned his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 1999 and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995.
