Joseph DeMott

Joseph J. DeMott is a Partner at Clement & Murphy, PLLC, where he practices complex litigation at all levels of the federal court system, including intellectual property matters. His practice spans a broad range of subjects, with specific experience in patent appeals to the Federal Circuit and challenges involving administrative law and constitutional issues. His patent litigation work has involved technology areas such as network security and enterprise cybersecurity.

DeMott has experience working for both patent owners and defendants in intellectual property disputes. While his tracked case appearance lists him representing the plaintiff, Centripetal Networks, LLC, the firm's broader appellate practice includes successfully defending against patent infringement claims at the Supreme Court. Before joining Clement & Murphy, he clerked for Judge Judith W. Rogers of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and served as a Trial Attorney with the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice for three and a half years.

A notable aspect of DeMott's experience includes his involvement in Centripetal Networks, LLC v. Palo Alto Networks, Inc. et al., which stemmed from inter partes review (IPR) proceedings at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). In Federal Circuit appeals related to these IPRs, he represented Centripetal Networks. One Federal Circuit decision vacated and remanded a PTAB finding, instructing the Board to reconsider evidence of copying as part of its obviousness analysis. Other appeals resulted in Federal Circuit Rule 36 affirmances, upholding findings that Centripetal's network security patents were unpatentable.

Joseph DeMott earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School, where he was a member of the Stanford Law Review and the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic.
