Joseph A. Hynds

Joseph A. Hynds is a first-chair patent litigator and Member at Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck, P.C., with over three decades of experience in complex patent disputes. His practice spans a wide array of technology areas, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, agricultural equipment, security systems, telecommunications, and e-commerce. He is also recognized for his work in Hatch-Waxman litigation.

Hynds primarily represents clients in federal courts across the country and appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, consistently defending clients' interests. His tracked appearances include serving as lead counsel for the defendant in Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. v. Amgen Inc. He has also handled numerous other cases, including those for pharmaceutical clients such as Pfizer and Bayer, and in other technical fields.

He possesses substantial experience in post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), having acted as lead counsel in numerous inter partes review (IPR), post-grant review (PGR), and covered business method (CBM) proceedings. Hynds also provides pivotal counsel on various IP issues, including opinions of counsel on infringement, validity, and enforceability, freedom to operate evaluations, and licensing matters.

Hynds earned his law degree from The George Washington University Law School in 1991, having previously served as a patent examiner at the USPTO. He has been selected to Super Lawyers for Intellectual Property Litigation from 2012-2026 and has been included in The Best Lawyers in America® guide for Litigation – Intellectual Property, Litigation – Patent, and Patent Law.
