Jonathan Daniel Baker

Jonathan Daniel Baker is a highly experienced patent litigator with over 25 years in intellectual property law, currently serving as a Member at Dickinson Wright. His practice is primarily focused on defending technology companies against patent infringement claims. Mr. Baker's technical background in electrical engineering allows him to handle complex cases across diverse technology areas, including computer hardware and software, wireless communications, semiconductors, analog circuitry, life sciences, and financial trading systems.

He regularly represents clients in district court litigation, before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and in appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. He also possesses extensive experience in post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), frequently handling inter partes review (IPR) matters.

Among his notable engagements, Mr. Baker served as lead counsel for Roku, Inc. in VideoLabs, Inc. v. Roku, Inc., a patent infringement case concerning remote control technology for media streaming players, where he secured critical claim construction rulings and a motion to stay proceedings pending IPR resolution. He also represented Roku in related ITC and PTAB proceedings, achieving favorable outcomes. Other significant results include convincing a plaintiff to dismiss an entire patent infringement case involving video coding technology against Roku before the initial case management conference, and winning summary judgment of invalidity in a 3D graphics technology patent dispute.

Mr. Baker earned his J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1997, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994, and a B.S. summa cum laude in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1992. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Alvin A. Schall on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
