Jonah Heemstra

Jonah Heemstra is an intellectual property litigation attorney with a practice focused on patent disputes across a range of technical fields, particularly electronics, software, and mechanical devices. His experience spans both prosecuting and defending challenges to patents, including claims of infringement, misuse, and invalidity. He also handles trademark and copyright litigation.

Currently an Associate at Husch Blackwell, Mr. Heemstra was previously Of Counsel at Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP, where he was involved in significant patent litigation. In the tracked case of Apple, Inc. v. CPC Patent Technologies Pty Ltd, he appeared on the defendant side. However, in related proceedings, Mr. Heemstra represented CPC Patent Technologies Pty Ltd. as the appellant in a Federal Circuit appeal (No. 2024-1365) from an inter partes review (IPR2022-00600) concerning a remote entry system patent (US9665705B2) challenged by Apple Inc. The Federal Circuit affirmed the unpatentability of the patent, thus upholding the PTAB's decision.

Mr. Heemstra possesses extensive experience in PTAB proceedings, having handled all aspects of IPRs. His work includes drafting petitions and patent owner responses, defending expert depositions, and preparing materials for oral hearings across various technologies. He regularly argues discovery dispute hearings and Markman proceedings in federal district courts.

He holds a J.D. cum laude from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University. Mr. Heemstra is admitted to practice in Illinois, the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
