Jonah D. Mitchell

Jonah D. Mitchell is a highly experienced intellectual property and commercial trial lawyer at Reed Smith LLP, focusing his practice on complex, high-stakes patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and commercial disputes. He predominantly represents operating companies as a defendant, with all his tracked appearances being on the defendant side.

Mitchell's technological expertise spans a wide array of industries, including high tech, health care, manufacturing, and consumer goods. He handles cases involving diverse technologies such as computer hardware and software, networking equipment, cloud computing, cybersecurity, database and data integration software, integrated circuits, WiFi chips, Ethernet technology, MEMS sensors, medical imaging software, and medical devices.

A significant portion of his notable work includes successfully defending clients in multi-forum patent litigation. In Centripetal Networks, Inc. v. Keysight Technologies, Inc. et al., Mitchell served as lead counsel, securing a finding of no violation at the ITC where all three asserted patents were found invalid. He also achieved a 100% institution rate on eight IPRs at the PTAB, leading to the invalidation of 185 claims across eight patents, and subsequently secured multiple Federal Circuit affirmances of these victories. His other significant successes include prevailing in IPRs for clients in Open Text S.A. v. Box, Inc. and ZyXEL Communications v. UNM Rainforest Innovations, where he also obtained Federal Circuit reversals, leading to the invalidation of all challenged claims across three patents.

Mitchell possesses extensive experience before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where he consistently achieves high rates of invalidation for challenged claims. He is admitted to the State Bar of California, having earned his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law in 1999, and a B.S. in Agricultural Business from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1995. He has been recognized as one of the Top Intellectual Property Lawyers in California by the Daily Journal and has been named to the IAM Patent 1000.
