John W. Bateman was an accomplished intellectual property litigator with a practice primarily focused on complex patent disputes in the life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors, including litigation related to generic drugs. Throughout his career, he focused on defending operating companies. In his one tracked case, he served as lead counsel for the defendant, Avis Budget Group, Inc., in a patent infringement suit brought by the non-practicing entity TQP Development, LLC.

Mr. Bateman practiced in Washington, D.C. for over three decades. He began his career at the intellectual property boutique Kenyon & Kenyon, where he became a partner. Following Kenyon & Kenyon's dissolution, he practiced at Haynes and Boone before joining Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP as a partner. While at Haynes and Boone, he spoke on the strategic use of Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs) for challenging pharmaceutical patents, though public records do not indicate a high volume of personal appearances before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Colleagues remembered him as a distinguished and highly skilled trial lawyer. Mr. Bateman earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia. He passed away in October 2021.
