John P. Haynes

John D. Haynes is a highly experienced patent litigation attorney and a co-chair of the Intellectual Property Group at Alston & Bird, where he has practiced for over 25 years. His practice focuses on complex technology disputes, particularly within the telecommunications industry, including wireless devices, electronics, semiconductor design, computer software, and computer networks. He also handles patent cases involving standard-essential patents (SEPs) subject to RAND or FRAND obligations.

Mr. Haynes frequently defends operating companies in patent infringement matters, with his single tracked appearance being on the defendant side. His firm profile highlights a proven record of success in both offensive and defensive patent disputes in U.S. district courts and the International Trade Commission (ITC). He has successfully represented major U.S. wireless carriers and leading cellular communications and infrastructure companies, securing favorable settlements and jury verdicts.

He has been lead counsel in several significant cases, including obtaining summary judgment of noninfringement for a photon emission tomography scanning equipment provider, which was affirmed by the Federal Circuit. He also served as lead counsel for Nokia in ITC actions against Apple, resulting in a global settlement, and for Nokia Corporation and Alcatel Submarine Networks in ITC investigations. Further notable outcomes include winning decisions for Nokia in an ITC campaign against Amazon & HP, winning all patents for Ericsson against Lenovo, and a successful defense for ASUS against Lenovo.

Mr. Haynes possesses extensive experience with inter partes review (IPR) and reexamination proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He is admitted to the Georgia Bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his J.D. from Columbia University in 1999 and a B.S.E.E. from Florida State University in 1996.
