John L. Abramic

John L. Abramic is a highly experienced patent litigator and the chair of Steptoe's Intellectual Property group, operating out of the firm's Chicago office, where he previously served as managing partner. His practice encompasses a broad array of technology areas, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, chemicals, semiconductors, telecommunications, machinery, and computer software. Abramic's work spans the full spectrum of intellectual property litigation, including patents, trade secrets, and copyright.

Abramic has demonstrated success representing both plaintiffs and defendants in complex patent disputes. While the tracked case, Express Mobile, Inc. v. GoDaddy.com, LLC, saw him representing the plaintiff, his broader practice includes securing significant plaintiff-side jury verdicts, such as a $170 million award in a web development technology case, and multimillion-dollar verdicts in software and automotive technologies. On the defense side, he has successfully invalidated asserted claims in medical device jury trials, defeated multi-patent infringement claims exceeding $4 billion in the telecommunications sector, and protected pharmaceutical patent portfolios against PTAB challenges.

A prominent achievement includes securing a $170 million jury verdict for Express Mobile, Inc. against GoDaddy.com in a case concerning foundational web-design patents. This victory was further solidified by a subsequent decision from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) that relied on the jury's finding of no invalidity, delivering another win for Express Mobile after multiple IPR challenges and a successful appeal to the Federal Circuit. Abramic frequently appears before the PTAB, having represented clients in dozens of post-grant review proceedings, including both petitioners and patent owners, and has successfully argued before the Federal Circuit.

He earned his J.D. with high honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, in 2001, where he was Order of the Coif and on the Chicago-Kent Law Review. He also holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with honors from the Illinois Institute of Technology, obtained in 1997. Abramic is admitted to practice in Illinois.
