A significant portion of Kushan's practice involves contested proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He has served as lead counsel in over 225 PTAB proceedings and has argued more than 25 times before the Board. He frequently represents patent owners in Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings, as seen in cases such as Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. (IPR2017-01916) and Huawei Technologies Company Co., Ltd. Kushan earned his J.D. with honors from The George Washington University Law School in 1992, an M.A. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and a B.S. in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, as well as in the District of Columbia and Virginia.
