Jason Yu is a partner in Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe's Intellectual Property Group, where he focuses on complex patent and trade secret litigation. His practice encompasses a broad range of technology areas, drawing on his electrical engineering background. These include information technology, satellite communications, semiconductor manufacturing, circuit design and verification tools, image texture and graphics processing, gaming, and various software products.

Mr. Yu primarily defends operating companies in patent disputes, with the majority of his tracked appearances on the defendant's side. He has served as both Counsel and Lead Counsel in these matters. His experience extends to representing technology companies in federal and state courts, the International Trade Commission, and before the Patent and Trademark Office.

A notable engagement includes his role as Counsel for Netflix, Inc. in the protracted patent infringement case, Personalized Media Communications, LLC v. Netflix, Inc. This dispute, involving six patents related to adaptive streaming and signal processing, concluded with the plaintiff's claims being dismissed with prejudice after more than three years of litigation. Other significant representations include defending a subsidiary of EMC against PB&J Software, LLC, which resulted in a stipulated dismissal, and defending VMware, Inc. against Mosaid Technologies, Inc., leading to a settlement. He also assisted the trial team that secured a $309 million judgment in a trade secret, copyright, and trademark case for MGA Entertainment against Mattel Inc.

In addition to district court litigation, Mr. Yu possesses extensive experience with inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He has drafted and managed IPR petitions that successfully led to the cancellation of all challenged claims, particularly in matters involving VMware, Inc. Mr. Yu is admitted to practice in California and before various U.S. District Courts and the Federal Circuit. He earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University in 2005 and his J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 2009.
