Specialty & background

Jason D. Cassady is a principal at the Dallas-based intellectual property and business litigation firm Caldwell Cassady & Curry, where he focuses on patent infringement and complex commercial litigation. The firm was established in 2013, and he has been a principal since its inception. His practice primarily involves representing plaintiffs in high-stakes patent disputes, with all nine of his tracked appearances being on the plaintiff side. While he has occasionally represented defendants in other litigation areas, his notable patent work overwhelmingly involves prosecuting for patent holders, including operating companies and those akin to non-practicing entities (NPEs)/patent assertion entities (PAEs).

Mr. Cassady handles a diverse range of technologies, including secure computer networking, integrated circuits, video game controllers, computer operating systems, wireless network and telecommunication technologies, streaming media delivery, and electronic program guide technologies. He has been trial counsel in cases involving internet security, video sharing, and mercury emissions control technologies.

Throughout his career, Mr. Cassady has been instrumental in securing significant verdicts and settlements. He played a lead role in multiple multimillion-dollar victories for VirnetX Inc. against Apple Inc., including a $368 million verdict in 2012, a $625 million verdict in February 2016, a $302 million verdict in October 2016, and a $502.8 million verdict in October 2020 related to network security patents. Additionally, he was part of the team that achieved a $533 million patent infringement verdict for Smartflash LLC against Apple Inc. in 2015. Other notable outcomes include a $105 million verdict (with a final judgment exceeding $172 million) for VidStream, LLC against Twitter, Inc. (now X Corp.) in 2025 for online video sharing technology, a $57 million verdict for Midwest Energy Emissions Corp. in early 2024, and a $1.7 million verdict for Constellation Designs against LG Electronics Inc. in 2023 for ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV) standard technology. He was also involved in Adeia Technologies Inc.'s patent infringement litigation against The Walt Disney Company, which settled confidentially in late 2025. His experience extends to matters involving the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), as evidenced by his involvement in the ZitoVault patent case where a client's cybersecurity patent successfully withstood a PTAB challenge.

Mr. Cassady earned his J.D., cum laude, from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 2004, and a B.A. in Sociology, cum laude, from The University of Texas in 2000. He was admitted to the Texas Bar in 2004.
