James Young

James Young, Ph.D., is a patent litigator at Fish & Richardson, focusing his practice on U.S. District Court actions and appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He possesses a strong technical background in electrical and computer engineering, specializing in matters involving standard-essential patents (SEPs), particularly those related to Wi-Fi technology, semiconductors, hardware, and consumer electronics. His experience also extends to litigating before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).

Young's patent litigation practice reflects experience on both the plaintiff and defendant sides, though his tracked appearances show a lean toward defending operating companies. He has notably represented Wilus Institute of Standards and Technology Inc. as lead counsel in a patent dispute against HP Inc. concerning Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) patents, which concluded in a dismissal with prejudice. He has also defended Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and other unknown defendants in separate actions brought by Wilus Institute of Standards and Technology Inc., cases that involve Wi-Fi 6 standard-essential patents.

Currently an Associate in Fish & Richardson's Washington, D.C. office, James Young joined the firm in November 2024, following a clerkship with Judge Leonard P. Stark at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His practice includes significant involvement in post-grant proceedings, with experience before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) in Inter Partes Review (IPR) and Post-Grant Review (PGR).

Young earned his J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2022. He holds a Ph.D. (2014), M.S. (2008) in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a B.S. with high honors (2007) in Computer Engineering, all from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is admitted to the District of Columbia Bar, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
