James P. Gagen

James P. Gagen is a partner in the Intellectual Property practice at Paul Hastings, based in their Washington, D.C. office. He joined Paul Hastings in March 2024 as part of a six-partner team of IP litigators from Allen & Overy LLP. His practice focuses on high-stakes technology litigation in U.S. District Courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).

Mr. Gagen has experience across a range of technologies, including AI, e-commerce, software, and hardware systems. He is particularly noted for his deep experience with Section 337 matters at the ITC, representing both complainants and respondents. While he has appeared on both the plaintiff and defendant sides in his tracked cases (2 plaintiff, 3 defendant), his recent work at Paul Hastings emphasizes defending clients in complex intellectual property disputes. Notable cases include his role as Lead Counsel for SoundHound AI, Inc. in VB Assets LLC v.
