James E. Scarbrough

James E. Scarbrough is a Partner and the Partner-in-Charge of the Cleveland office at Lippes Mathias LLP, where he leads the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Team. His practice is primarily focused on patent matters, including patent prosecution, legal opinions, due diligence, and litigation support. With a background in Mechanical Engineering, Mr. Scarbrough specializes in mechanical arts, advising clients on issues related to manufacturing processes, metal handling, paint application, consumer goods, and medical devices.

In terms of litigation, Mr. Scarbrough has primarily represented defendants. His tracked appearance includes serving as Of Counsel/Local Counsel for Bose Corporation in the patent infringement case Bose Corp v. IngenioSpec LLC in the Eastern District of Texas, which was terminated following a settlement. Lippes Mathias's broader Intellectual Property Litigation team represents clients in both enforcing and defending patents across various industries, including biotechnology, computer software, and manufacturing.

Before joining Lippes Mathias, Mr. Scarbrough was a managing partner at Fay Sharpe LLP, an intellectual property boutique firm in Cleveland, Ohio, which combined with Lippes Mathias in January 2023. He also brings prior industry experience as a mechanical engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. His experience also extends to proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Mr. Scarbrough earned his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1997, an M.B.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1991, and a B.S. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1986. He is admitted to practice in Ohio and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
