J. Daniel Kang

J. Daniel Kang is a patent litigation attorney at Venable LLP, where he holds the position of Counsel in the firm's New York office. His practice is particularly focused on complex patent disputes involving electrical, electronic, and software arts. He has experience across a broad spectrum of technologies, including computer software and hardware, streaming media, telecommunications, automotive, semiconductors, and medical devices.

In his litigation practice, Mr. Kang handles matters for both patent holders and accused infringers. His tracked cases show appearances on both the plaintiff (two instances, including one as lead counsel) and defendant sides (one instance), indicating a versatile practice in asserting and defending patent rights.

A significant portion of his recent work has involved multinational patent disputes related to adaptive bit-rate and video streaming technology, notably in the cases of Aylo Freesites Ltd. v. DISH Technologies LLC and DISH Technologies L.L.C. et al. v. Aylo Freesites Ltd et al. These complex cases have seen activity across various jurisdictions, including appeals to the Federal Circuit in the U.S. and proceedings before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Unified Patent Court (UPC) in Europe, with some European outcomes indicating successful defense for Aylo. His work in these matters also demonstrates familiarity with Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, with related IPRs appearing in the docket.

Mr. Kang is admitted to the New York bar and registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his J.D. cum laude from New York Law School in 2015, where he received an Intellectual Property Law Certification. He holds a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, awarded in 2011.
