Isaac S. Ashkenazi

Isaac S. Ashkenazi is a partner in the Life Sciences Intellectual Property (IP) group at Paul Hastings LLP, based in the firm's New York office. He specializes in complex intellectual property disputes, primarily focusing on patent litigation within the pharmaceutical, chemistry, and biotechnology sectors. His experience encompasses a broad range of technologies, including pharmaceutical compounds, proteins, antibodies, polymers, and various therapeutics such as oncology drugs, Parkinson's medications, and antidiabetic agents.

Ashkenazi has a balanced practice representing both patent owners and challengers, often operating companies. His tracked case appearances include serving as lead counsel on the defendant side in Merus N.V. v. Xencor, Inc. and as counsel on the plaintiff side in Xencor, Inc. v. Merus N.V.. He has secured favorable outcomes for plaintiff-patentee clients and successfully invalidated patents asserted against defendant clients.

His notable representations include prevailing at trial for Heron Therapeutics concerning its Cinvanti® treatment, achieving a complete victory for JSR in a patent dispute, securing a favorable settlement for Alkermes related to its Vivitrol® medication, and successfully defending Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corp.'s Invokana® and Invokamet® patents in a Hatch-Waxman trial. He is also recognized for his role in invalidating a key patent for Humira®, a top-selling drug.

Ashkenazi is active in post-grant review and Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), having been involved in such proceedings related to the Merus N.V. v. Xencor, Inc. and Xencor, Inc. v. Merus N.V. cases. He is admitted to the New York and New Jersey Bars and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his J.D. with a concentration in Intellectual Property from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 2005 and a B.E.C.E. from The Cooper Union in 2002.
