Irene Inkyu Yang

Irene Inkyu Yang is a highly experienced patent litigation attorney and a co-leader of Sidley Austin LLP's global IP Litigation practice. Her practice focuses on representing clients in complex intellectual property and business disputes across high-tech, healthcare, and life sciences industries. She handles matters involving a diverse range of technologies, including networking and telecommunications, software, semiconductors, cybersecurity, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and consumer devices. Yang also advises clients on FRAND (Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory) obligations for standard-essential patents.

Yang primarily defends operating companies. Her tracked appearance includes representing the defendant, Adobe Inc., in Express Mobile, Inc. v. Adobe Inc. et al. This case involved patents described as foundational to modern web design and development technology, specifically browser-based website generation tools and runtime engines. Her experience includes securing complete defense jury verdicts, such as for Microsoft in a patent infringement suit concerning videoconferencing technologies (Biscotti Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation) and for a Fortune 500 company in a patent suit related to e-commerce platforms. She also served as appellate counsel for Block, Inc. in a Federal Circuit case that affirmed the ineligibility of asserted claims under 35 U.S.C. § 101.

She actively practices before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, in addition to numerous U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).
