Ian G. Paquette

Ian G. Paquette is a patent litigation attorney at Venable LLP, with a practice primarily focused on patent litigation in district courts and proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), as well as the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). His experience spans a diverse range of technologies, including 3D optical scanners, wireless charging, robotic automated storage and retrieval systems, oilfield technology, medical devices, and wireless earbuds. Prior to his litigation career, Mr. Paquette served as a patent examiner, including as a primary examiner, at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he focused on applications related to valves and complex fluid-handling systems.

Mr. Paquette handles patent disputes for both plaintiffs and defendants. His tracked appearances include two instances as plaintiff's counsel and one as defendant's counsel. Notably, he has been involved in significant litigation surrounding adaptive bit-rate streaming technology, particularly in cases involving Aylo Freesites Ltd. and DISH Technologies LLC. These cases include Aylo Freesites Ltd. v. DISH Technologies LLC, where he represented the plaintiff as Of Counsel, and DISH Technologies L.L.C. et al. v. Aylo Freesites Ltd et al., where he served as counsel for the defendant.

His PTAB experience is substantial, including preparing petitions and patent owner responses in inter partes reviews. Several proceedings related to the Aylo/DISH litigation were subject to IPRs, such as IPR2024-00046, where a patent was deemed "Unpatentable" in a final written decision that was subsequently appealed. One district court case involving DISH Technologies L.L.C. et al. v. Aylo Freesites Ltd et al. was stayed pending the conclusion of inter partes reviews.

Mr. Paquette earned his J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland (2010). He is admitted to practice in New York, the District of Columbia, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
