Hyun-Joong Kim

Hyun-Joong "Daniel" Kim is a Special Counsel in the Intellectual Property Practice Group at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, based in the firm's New York office. He focuses on patent litigation across a diverse range of technical fields, including Wi-Fi wireless down conversion technologies, electronic components in automotive vehicles, HVAC systems, genetically-modified bacteria for feed additives, medical devices, wearable technology, mobile devices, and LCD display technology. His technical background includes a B.S.E. in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering from Duke University.

Kim primarily defends global operating companies in high-stakes intellectual property disputes. His experience includes successfully defending a global automotive component manufacturer in a multi-patent dispute, representing a leading consumer electronics company in complex Wi-Fi patent litigation, and securing dismissals in cases involving HVAC systems. He served as lead counsel for LG Electronics in the case Velocity Communication Technologies, LLC v. LG Electronics. His practice also involves representing clients in cases before the U.S. International Trade Commission and managing large-scale litigations from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal.

He possesses experience with PTAB (Patent Trial and Appeal Board) proceedings, having represented a consumer electronics client in a multi-defendant suit concerning wearable devices that involved both district court litigation and PTAB actions. Kim has also been a speaker on "Navigating the PTAB: Strategic Insights from Recent Decisions" at industry forums. He is recognized in Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch since 2024 for Appellate Practice, Litigation—Intellectual Property, and Litigation-Patent.

Kim earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 2014 and his B.S.E. from Duke University in 2009, cum laude, with distinction. He is admitted to practice in New York, before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and in multiple U.S. District Courts, including the Eastern, Western, and Southern Districts of New York, and the Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. He is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
