Gregory D. Lanier

Gregory D. Lanier is a highly experienced patent litigation attorney and a Partner in Jones Day's Intellectual Property practice, based in the firm's Silicon Valley office. With over 35 years of experience, he focuses on leading major intellectual property and business disputes for global companies.

Lanier's practice spans a wide range of complex technologies, including software, communications, semiconductors, optical lens systems, radio frequency identification (RFID), location-based services, and camera technologies. While his significant defense-side work includes representing major technology companies like Google, NXP Semiconductors, and Motorola Solutions against patent infringement allegations, he also represents clients in enforcing their own patent portfolios. He appeared as Of Counsel for the plaintiff in Advanced Coding Technologies LLC v. Apple Inc., consistent with his experience representing clients on both sides of patent disputes.

His notable successes include securing a trial victory for Google LLC in a patent litigation brought by WSOU Investments LLC, which was affirmed by the Federal Circuit, and winning a rare directed verdict of non-infringement mid-trial for Google in another 15-patent dispute. Lanier has also achieved successful resolutions for NXP Semiconductors in complex, multi-jurisdictional patent disputes involving over 50 patents and has represented Google in Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Mr. Lanier earned his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1988 and his B.A., cum laude, from Santa Clara University in 1985. He is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fifth, Ninth, and Federal Circuits, as well as several U.S. District Courts.
