Gerard M. Donovan

Gerard M. Donovan is a Partner in the Intellectual Property and Emerging Technology Groups at Reed Smith LLP, focusing his practice on complex IP litigation and strategy. With a background in computer engineering, he primarily handles matters related to medical devices, cybersecurity technologies, and artificial intelligence, with experience also extending to FinTech, IoT, and various electrical, electronic, and software technologies.

Mr. Donovan has a strong defendant-side preference, notably representing operating companies in significant patent disputes. As appellate counsel for Keysight Technologies, Inc. in Centripetal Networks, LLC v. Keysight Technologies, Inc., he was part of the team that secured major successes for Keysight. These outcomes included Federal Circuit affirmations of the U.S. International Trade Commission's decision finding no infringement and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board's (PTAB) inter partes review (IPR) decisions, which invalidated most asserted patent claims and, on cross-appeal, deemed additional claims invalid.

His practice includes deep experience before federal district courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) in IPRs and other patent challenges, as well as the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. He has acted as lead counsel in IPR proceedings.

Mr. Donovan earned his J.D. in Intellectual Property from Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law in 2009 and a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Drexel University in 2005. He is admitted to practice in Virginia, the District of Columbia, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
