Specialty & background

Eric J. Maurer is a highly experienced patent litigation partner at Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, where he has practiced for more than two decades, having rejoined the firm in 2016 after an earlier tenure from 2007-2012. His practice focuses on complex commercial matters with a significant high-tech component, including patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and antitrust actions. His technology experience spans a diverse range, including educational software, streaming video, women's health technology (mammography systems), medical devices, digital imaging devices, integrated circuits, liquid crystal displays, light-emitting diodes, and automotive parts. He also handles matters involving consumer product design, as evidenced by his representation in the ongoing HandsFree Labs Licensing, LLC et al. v. Skechers U.S.A., Inc. case, which concerns hands-free footwear technology.

Maurer represents both plaintiffs and defendants in patent disputes before trial and appeals courts. While his tracked appearance includes a plaintiff-side role for HandsFree Labs, his portfolio demonstrates a balanced practice. Notable achievements include securing a patent infringement jury trial verdict for an educational software provider, which was recognized in the New York Law Journal's "Verdicts Hall of Fame". He successfully defended a "Big Four tech company" against streaming video patent infringement claims, obtaining non-infringement judgments that were upheld on appeal. Additionally, he obtained a preliminary injunction in a trade secret misappropriation case for a women's health innovator and achieved a $50 million jury verdict for willful patent infringement for a major LCD manufacturer.

Beyond district court litigation, Mr. Maurer regularly practices before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the International Trade Commission (ITC). He also previously shared his expertise by teaching "Patent Enforcement" at The George Washington University Law School for over ten years.

Mr. Maurer earned his J.D., with high honors, from The George Washington University School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Law Review. He holds a B.S. with honors in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
