Edward Reines

Edward Reines is a distinguished patent litigator with extensive experience in the life sciences and technology sectors. His practice focuses on defending operating companies in high-stakes disputes involving complex technologies, including genetic technologies, diagnostic tests, microfluidics, and various high-tech innovations such as printing and Wi-Fi standards. He primarily represents defendants, as evidenced by his tracked appearances and descriptions of his client work.

Prior to joining Jones Day in 2025, Mr. Reines spent 32 years at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, where he co-headed the firm's nationwide Patent Litigation practice and its Life Sciences practice. His tracked cases include defending Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in Xifi Networks R&D, Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al., serving as lead counsel for Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. in Halozyme, Inc. v. Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. et al., and representing Visa, Inc. in Cortex MCP, Inc. v. Visa, Inc.

Mr. Reines's notable achievements include overturning a $96 million patent verdict involving genetic technologies, securing a nearly $45 million jury verdict in a Lanham Act false advertising case for CareDx Inc., and winning a $24 million verdict in a prenatal genetic testing methods case, alongside a defense verdict on a $105 million contract claim. He also obtained a complete summary judgment for HP against Acacia Research Corp. in a multidistrict patent litigation, leading to an award of legal fees, and helped Illumina Inc. secure a willful patent infringement verdict.

He possesses significant experience in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings and appellate matters, frequently appearing before district courts and the Federal Circuit. Mr. Reines earned his B.S. from SUNY Albany in 1985 and his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1988. He is admitted to the State Bar of California and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
