Edward R. Reines

Edward R. Reines is a prominent patent litigator specializing in high-stakes intellectual property disputes within the life sciences, biotechnology, and high-technology sectors. His practice frequently involves complex issues related to genetic technologies, diagnostic tests, prenatal genetic testing methods, microfluidic technologies, and cancer testing. Reines has experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in competitor-versus-competitor disputes, with his tracked appearances showing a balanced record of two plaintiff-side and three defendant-side engagements.

Currently, Mr. Reines is a partner at Jones Day, having joined the firm in March 2025. Prior to this, he was Co-Head of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP's nationwide Patent Litigation practice and Co-Head of that firm's Life Sciences practice. He is recognized as a first-chair trial lawyer and appellate advocate, known for his robust trial and appellate experience.

His notable representations include securing a $45 million verdict in a Lanham Act false advertising lawsuit concerning diagnostic tests and a $24 million verdict in a case involving prenatal genetic testing methods. He was also involved in overturning a $96 million patent infringement verdict related to genetic technologies and achieving a complete summary judgment in a multidistrict patent litigation. Reines served as counsel for NanoString Technologies, Inc. in 10x Genomics, Inc. et al. v. NanoString Technologies, Inc., a case that eventually concluded with a global cross-license agreement between the parties in May 2025, after 10x Genomics had been awarded $31 million in damages.

Mr. Reines possesses significant experience in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings and other Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) matters. He was admitted to the State Bar of California on December 7, 1988. He earned his B.S. from SUNY Albany in 1985 and his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1988.
