Douglas G. Muehlhauser

Douglas G. Muehlhauser is an experienced patent litigator with a practice focused predominantly on representing patent owners in high-technology disputes. His litigation experience spans over 30 years, encompassing a wide array of technical fields including computer hardware and software, wireless communication protocols (such as Bluetooth technology), laboratory instrumentation, medical devices, compounds, and processes. Muehlhauser's background includes 10 years of software development experience prior to his legal career, which provides a deep technical foundation for his software-related cases.

Muehlhauser primarily operates on the plaintiff side, representing patent holders in disputes against larger operating companies. His tracked appearances reflect this, showing four cases as plaintiff-side counsel, with no defendant-side roles. He has served as lead counsel, securing victories for his clients at trial, on appeal, before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and through settlements and license agreements.

He is currently a partner at MacArthur James LLP, having previously been a partner at Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear LLP. Muehlhauser was notably recognized as an IP "Giant Slayer" by The Recorder in 2017 for his work.

Among his notable cases, Muehlhauser served as lead attorney for One-E-Way, Inc. in an ITC investigation involving wireless audio systems and Bluetooth technology. In a significant outcome, he secured a precedential decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in One-E-Way v. International Trade Commission (Fed. Cir. 2017), which reversed an ITC ruling of patent indefiniteness related to wireless digital audio systems. He continues to represent One-E-Way, Inc. in ongoing patent infringement matters, including cases against Apple Inc. and Dell Inc. Muehlhauser also has a record of successfully defending patent owners in over 50 Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings. He was counsel for One-E-Way, Inc. in a PTAB proceeding against Sony Corporation, which concluded with a joint motion to terminate after a settlement.

Muehlhauser is admitted to the State Bar of California (since 1995). He earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University, and a B.A. in Computer Science from UCSD.
