Specialty & background

Doug Lumish is a highly regarded patent litigation attorney and Co-Head of Weil, Gotshal & Manges' nationwide IP, Technology & Science Litigation practice. He specializes in high-stakes patent, trade secret, contract, licensing, and other technology and life sciences related disputes. Lumish's practice encompasses a diverse range of technical areas, including high tech, biotechnology, life sciences, AI, cloud security, internet, semiconductor, networking, telecommunications, and software. He serves as lead strategic and trial counsel for some of the world's most sophisticated technology and life sciences companies.

While he has considerable experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants, his tracked case, SITNETLLC v. META PLATFORMS, INC., involved defending a major technology company. His notable experience frequently highlights his role in defending large corporate clients such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Arista Networks, Disney, and Comcast against significant patent and trade secret claims.

Lumish returned to Weil, Gotshal & Manges in July 2025, where he began his legal career and spent his initial 15 years in patent litigation. Before rejoining Weil, he served for 12 years at Latham & Watkins, including as Bay Area local department chair for its litigation department, and also held a leadership role as head of IP litigation at Kasowitz Benson Torres & Friedman for over two years.

His impressive track record includes securing the reversal of a $600 million patent verdict against Gen Digital at the Federal Circuit and achieving a summary judgment win for Amazon in a patent and trade secret case in the Western District of Washington. Lumish litigates before various principal IP venues, including federal trial and appellate courts, and the International Trade Commission. The Weil IP practice also handles PTAB procedures, including inter partes reviews (IPRs).

Admitted to the State Bar of California on December 3, 1996, Lumish gained in-depth technical experience as a systems consultant to technology companies prior to his legal career.
