Dennis J. Butler

Dennis J. Butler is a partner at Panitch Schwarze Belisario & Nadel LLP, focusing his practice on intellectual property and technology law, including patent litigation, counseling, and procurement. His technical background in mechanical engineering underpins a practice concentrated in mechanical technologies, such as medical devices, industrial equipment, automotive and agricultural equipment, polymer systems, and electro/mechanical devices. He also has experience with technologies involving cellular telephones, electronic monitoring systems, software, and banking processes.

Butler represents both plaintiffs and defendants in federal intellectual property litigation, including patent infringement cases. His track record includes serving as lead counsel for plaintiff Zaxcom Inc. and successfully defending a motion to disqualify his firm while representing plaintiff Regalo International LLC in a patent infringement case concerning children's bed rails in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

Prior to joining Panitch Schwarze, Mr. Butler served as patent counsel at Synthes, Inc., where he managed patent portfolios for the spinal implant division and assisted with patent litigation. He was also an associate and patent agent at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, and began his career as an engineer with Boeing Defense and Space Group and United Technologies – Pratt & Whitney.

He possesses extensive experience with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including the preparation, filing, and prosecution of patent applications, as well as inter partes practice before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Mr. Butler earned his J.D. from Temple University Law and holds M.S. and B.S. degrees in Engineering Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering Technology, respectively, from Pennsylvania State University. He is admitted to practice in Delaware, Pennsylvania, before the USPTO, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and multiple U.S. District Courts in Delaware and Pennsylvania.
