David Z. Petty

David Z. Petty is a Shareholder at McAndrews, Held & Malloy, a Chicago-based intellectual property and technology law firm established in 1988. His practice encompasses a comprehensive range of intellectual property services, including patent preparation and prosecution, IP litigation, post-grant proceedings, opinion work, licensing, and due diligence. Over 70% of the attorneys at McAndrews, Held & Malloy have dedicated their entire legal careers to the firm.

Mr. Petty’s litigation experience spans diverse technology areas, including contact lenses, lighting systems, electrotherapeutic devices, video poker machines, packaging, powered wheelchair technology, fluid control valves, and computer jukeboxes. He also has experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications across various fields, such as electrical connectors, medical imaging and surgical navigation devices, aerospace technologies, plastic packaging, and audio speakers. While he has appeared as Back-up Counsel for the plaintiff in the tracked case General Video LLC v. Lenovo, his broader practice involves representing clients in all aspects of major patent litigation, including pre-filing investigations, discovery, claim construction, motion practice, and trial and appellate work, without indicating a primary preference for either plaintiff or defendant side.

He is also active in post-grant proceedings, representing clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in reexaminations and other post-grant matters. His firm, McAndrews, Held & Malloy, is noted for maintaining one of the most active PTAB dockets, handling cases for both petitioners and patent owners.

Mr. Petty earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law and holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University. He is admitted to practice in Illinois, before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
