Cynthia Vreeland

Cynthia Vreeland is a highly experienced patent and trade secret litigator and a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP (WilmerHale). She joined Hale & Dorr, now WilmerHale, in 1996, and her practice has since focused almost exclusively on intellectual property disputes. Vreeland's expertise spans a broad range of technologies, including wireless devices, semiconductor chips, computer storage, medical devices, superconducting materials, pharmaceuticals, and LED chips.

Her practice primarily involves defending operating companies in high-stakes patent infringement trials. Across her career, she has served as lead or co-lead counsel in more than 20 trials. Notable defense work includes a successful outcome in an ITC investigation where seven asserted patents were found not infringed, invalid, or unenforceable, and securing a favorable settlement for CenterPoint and Itron in a case in the Eastern District of Texas. She also successfully defended Becton, Dickinson and Company against asserted patents by Baxter International. In the tracked case, Phenix Longhorn, LLC v. AU Optronics Corporation et al., she acted as a respected patent litigator for the defense.

Vreeland also possesses experience with Patent Office proceedings, having served as co-lead counsel for American Superconductor in a patent interference proceeding against MIT, successfully reversing a Patent Office finding. Her firm, WilmerHale, is recognized for handling PTAB post-grant reviews.

She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Texas. Vreeland earned her J.D. with honors from the University of Chicago Law School in 1990 and her B.A. summa cum laude from Baylor University in 1987.
