Cosmin Maier

Cosmin Maier is a patent litigation attorney at Desmarais LLP, known for his focus on patent infringement litigation, appeals, and inter partes review (IPR) proceedings. He demonstrates a broad technical understanding, handling cases across various fields including wireless communications, semiconductor fabrication, power control, voltage regulation, computer architecture, networking, digital cameras, digital signal processing, Bluetooth, multiprocessor systems, and encryption technology. His representative matters also cover LED technology, software graphical user interfaces, location monitoring technology, and smart devices.

Maier primarily represents defendants, with all three tracked appearances being on the defendant side, notably defending Apple Inc. in cases such as VB Assets, LLC v. Apple Inc. and Headwater Research LLC v. Apple Inc.. His defense work includes achieving a jury verdict of noninfringement for Apple in Identity Security LLC v. Apple Inc., a case involving digital identity and microprocessor identity patents. He has also secured jury verdicts of noninfringement or favorable settlements for defendant semiconductor and smartphone manufacturers in cases involving LED technology, semiconductor manufacturing, and encryption. While primarily defense-oriented, he has also represented a plaintiff/counterclaim-defendant wearable device maker in a case involving smart watches that resulted in a favorable jury verdict.

Maier's practice includes significant experience before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the Federal Circuit. Cosmin Maier joined Desmarais LLP in 2018, having previously been an Associate and Counsel at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP from 2007 to 2018. He earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School in 2007, and holds both an M.S.E. (2004) and B.S.E. (2003), summa cum laude, in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, with an optics concentration for his master's degree. He was admitted to the New York bar in 2008 and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
