Cortney Alexander

Cortney Alexander is an experienced patent litigator with nearly two decades of experience, currently a partner at Kent & Risley LLC in Alpharetta, Georgia. His legal career includes tenures at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, where he was a partner, and Frost Brown Todd. He is admitted to practice in Georgia, Louisiana, and Kentucky. Alexander earned his J.D. from Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 2002.

Alexander's practice focuses on the enforcement of U.S. patent rights at the trial-court level, encompassing a diverse range of technology areas. His case experience includes patents related to multimedia routing between electronic devices, control systems for exercise equipment, streaming and video processing technologies, DDR4 memory, automotive inventions, display technology, hydration sensing, object detection (including stealth aircraft), application-governed link opening, messaging contact identification, and Wi-Fi-capable devices. He primarily represents patent owners and innovators, having served as lead counsel in over 120 patent infringement litigations.

A notable tracked case, Modulus Systems, LLC v. Murata Electronics North America, Inc., saw Alexander as lead counsel for the plaintiff, asserting a patent on radio frequency module technology and data transmission methods. The case was filed in the Eastern District of Texas and closed within 257 days. He also represented Modulus Systems, LLC in a similar case against Silicon Laboratories, Inc., which resulted in a voluntary dismissal with prejudice, often indicative of an early resolution or licensing agreement. Other significant outcomes include successfully resolving claims in a POWERbahn case after the district court denied summary judgment motions of invalidity and noninfringement.

Alexander is also active in post-grant proceedings, representing clients before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and in appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His PTAB experience includes successfully opposing institution of Unified Patents' petition for inter partes review of a SynchView patent and defeating Apple's IPR petition against a Zipit Wireless patent in a Final Written Decision.
