Christopher P. Freeman

Christopher P. Freeman is a seasoned patent litigation attorney with extensive experience representing patent owners in efforts to monetize intellectual property. He has handled patent cases across a broad spectrum of technologies, including consumer products, computer and email security, database systems, streaming media, encryption, casino gaming technology, semiconductors, mobile devices and software, automotive components, and business methods.

His practice has primarily focused on the plaintiff side, representing patent acquisition and licensing entities. As a co-founder and former Vice President and Head of Litigation at Blackbird Technologies (also known as Blackbird Tech LLC), a company he co-founded in 2014, Mr. Freeman oversaw the strategic assertion and monetization of patent portfolios. This aligns with his single tracked appearance as Lead Counsel for Blackbird Tech LLC in Blackbird Tech LLC v. Wahoo Fitness, LLC, which involved a patent related to pedometer technology.

Prior to Blackbird Technologies, Mr. Freeman was an IP partner at Kirkland & Ellis, and also practiced at Latham & Watkins and Quinn Emanuel. His experience at Blackbird included building a portfolio of over 100 patents and applications. While at Blackbird Technologies, the company was involved in significant litigation, including instances where the Federal Circuit affirmed an award of attorneys' fees against Blackbird for "abusive litigation" in Blackbird Tech LLC v. Health in Motion LLC. He also has experience with PTAB proceedings, as Blackbird Tech LLC defended its patents against inter partes review (IPR) petitions, such as those filed by Fitbit and Wahoo Fitness.

Mr. Freeman earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Boston University School of Law and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and Economics from Northwestern University. He is currently a Managing Director at Burford Capital, where he assesses and underwrites legal risk in patent matters as part of their patent group.
