Specialty & background
Charles M. McMahon is a first-chair patent litigator with extensive experience defending technology companies in complex intellectual property disputes. His practice primarily focuses on patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and unfair competition law, leveraging his background in electrical engineering. He handles a diverse array of technologies, including wireless communications, solid-state electronics, encryption systems, digital imaging, software applications, and high-speed connectivity solutions.
McMahon predominantly represents defendants, aligning with his six tracked appearances, all on the defendant side. He is currently a partner at Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff LLP, having previously practiced at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton. Benesch's Intellectual Property practice is recognized for its comprehensive support across the patent lifecycle, from procurement to enforcement and defense.
A significant portion of his recent work includes representing Credo Technology Group Ltd. in multiple patent infringement actions, serving as lead counsel against entities such as Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., Volex PLC, Unified Patents, and Amphenol Corp. Notably, patent disputes between Credo Technology Group and Amphenol Corporation, and with Molex LLC, have resulted in confidential cross-license and settlement agreements, leading to the dismissal of all pending litigation. Other notable cases include defending a cellular communications device supplier in an ITC investigation, resulting in a finding of no infringement, and securing a unanimous defense verdict in a patent infringement trial involving automated heavy-duty truck transmission technology.
McMahon is also active in post-grant proceedings, regularly appearing before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His PTAB experience includes representing both patent owners, such as Credo Technology Group Ltd., and petitioners, like in Werner Co. v. Louisville Ladder, Inc., where he successfully challenged a competitor's patent, resulting in the cancellation of all challenged claims.
He earned his J.D. from George Washington University Law School and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. He is admitted to practice in Illinois, various U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
