Carolyn Chang

Carolyn Chang is an experienced intellectual property litigator and partner at Marton Ribera Schumann & Chang LLP, specializing in complex technology disputes for a diverse clientele, ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Her practice encompasses a broad array of technology areas, including biotechnology, software, consumer electronics, and telecommunications. Ms. Chang's experience extends to patent, trademark, trade secret, and copyright litigation.

Her patent litigation practice demonstrates a balanced approach, representing both plaintiffs and defendants. While her tracked appearances show one plaintiff-side and one defendant-side engagement as back-up counsel, her firm's public engagements highlight her representation of operating companies as defendants and petitioners in post-grant review proceedings. Before co-founding Marton Ribera Schumann & Chang LLP, Ms. Chang was an equity partner at an Am Law 100 firm.

Ms. Chang has achieved notable outcomes, including obtaining jury verdicts of non-infringement and invalidity of asserted claims for clients such as Taiv, Inc., in patent litigation concerning TV experience enhancement technology, and Redfin Corp., involving online 3D virtual tours. She has also successfully represented clients as petitioners in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), leading to the cancellation of all instituted claims for patents challenged by Netflix, Inc. Her PTAB experience also includes representing Zoho Corporation in IPR proceedings. She has litigated cases through trial and appellate courts, including arguing appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Additionally, Ms. Chang is a co-author of the Federal Judicial Center's Patent Case Management Judicial Guide (3rd ed. 2016).

Ms. Chang was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2001. She earned her J.D., cum laude and Order of the Coif, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2001, and holds a B.A. in Molecular Cell Biology and Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (1998). She is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and various federal district courts in California and the Eastern District of Texas.
