Brianne M. Straka

Brianne M. Straka is a co-managing partner in the Chicago office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, focusing on high-stakes complex commercial litigation and intellectual property disputes, with a particular emphasis on high-tech patent litigation. Her practice spans a broad range of technologies, including memory design, power control circuitry, cellular communications, spinal and polyethylene implants, antivirus and backup/recovery software, drug-eluting stents, medical infusion pumps, queuing software, and various mechanical and design patents. She also handles complex intellectual property issues such as FRAND licensing, standards setting, patent exhaustion, antitrust, and unfair competition.

Ms. Straka represents both plaintiffs and defendants in federal courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission. Her experience includes defending clients in patent infringement lawsuits, as evidenced by her representation of Klein Tools, Inc. in Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp v. Klein Tools, Inc.. Before joining Quinn Emanuel, she was an associate at McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. from 2009 to 2013.

Her notable engagements include securing a complete jury victory for Alcatel Lucent and AT&T in a $100 million patent case in the Eastern District of Texas, where the jury found all asserted claims not infringed and invalid. She also achieved summary judgment of invalidity for Nokia in a patent dispute against Sol IP and represented Qualcomm in patent infringement cases against Apple, which led to an Administrative Law Judge recommending a limited exclusion order against Apple's products at the ITC.

Ms. Straka is active in post-grant proceedings, having represented Klein Tools, Inc. as a petitioner in Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings against Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation (IPR2024-01400, IPR2024-01401). She was also involved in IPRs for Verizon, concerning stipulations for parallel district court litigation. Admitted to The State Bar of Illinois, Ms. Straka is also registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She earned her Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law in 2009.
