Brent P. Ray

Brent P. Ray is a seasoned patent litigator with a focus on high-stakes intellectual property disputes, primarily representing defendants. His practice spans technology, life sciences, and medical devices, with specific experience in areas such as advanced electronic resource allocation, remote monitoring technology, A/V components, chip assembly methodologies, and pharmaceuticals. Ray has consistently defended operating companies, serving as lead counsel in over 25 cases for Fortune 500 companies.

Ray is currently a partner in the Intellectual Property practice at Arnold & Porter, which he joined on February 27, 2025. Prior to this, he was a partner at King & Spalding. He is recognized for his trial advocacy, having first-chaired multiple cases to verdict across various major patent venues.

Among his notable achievements, Ray led the Arnold & Porter team to secure a unanimous jury verdict for Motive Technologies in a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Omnitracs in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. This decisive victory affirmed that Motive did not infringe any of Omnitracs' four asserted patents. He also appears regularly before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), demonstrating extensive experience in inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR) proceedings.

Ray earned his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law in 2003 and his B.S. from Northwestern University in 1999. He is admitted to practice in Illinois and New York, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Supreme Court of the United States, and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits.
