Benjamin W. Hattenbach

Benjamin W. Hattenbach is a highly experienced patent litigator and Partner at Irell & Manella LLP, where he also serves as vice chair of the firm's Litigation practice and has been a member of its Executive Committee for over a decade. His practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and counseling, particularly on complex patent infringement matters across a broad range of technologies, including life sciences and computer sciences.

Hattenbach maintains a balanced practice, representing both patent holders and defendants. He has secured more than six billion dollars in judgments and settlements for patent holders, including what is described as the largest judgment in the history of the U.S. patent system. Concurrently, he has successfully represented patent litigation defendants, turning the tables to recover hundreds of millions of dollars from plaintiffs. His tracked case experience includes appearances as "of counsel" in AlmondNet, Inc. v. Yahoo! Inc. (defendant side) and NantWorks, LLC et al. v. Niantic, Inc. (plaintiff side).

A registered patent attorney, Hattenbach regularly handles contested proceedings, such as inter partes reviews (IPRs), before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, in addition to litigating before federal and state courts, and the U.S. International Trade Commission. He provides strategic guidance on patent portfolio management, licensing, and acquisitions.

Hattenbach was admitted to the California Bar in 1996 and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Northern, and Southern Districts of California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth and Federal Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He earned his law degree from UC Berkeley School of Law.
