Anton N. Handal is a highly experienced patent litigator with over 40 years of first-chair litigation experience across Federal, State, and Administrative Tribunals. He is currently a Partner in the Intellectual Property group at Munck Wilson Mandala, based in their Los Angeles office, having joined the firm in August 2023 from Murchison and Cumming LLP. Previously, he was a shareholder in the Intellectual Property practice at Greenspoon Marder, which he joined in April 2017.
Mr. Handal's practice is focused on complex business disputes and intellectual property controversies, including patent infringement, trademark infringement, trade secrets, and Lanham Act violations. He has also handled matters related to breaches of fiduciary duty, partnership break-ups, professional liability, and product liability. His diverse experience spans technology areas such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, business methods, medical devices, software, molecular biology, biomedical systems, and apparel. In his extensive career, he has served as lead counsel in over 170 patent litigation matters.
As demonstrated by his role as lead counsel for the defendant in Vision Works IP Corp. v. Volvo Car USA LLC, Mr. Handal frequently represents defendants, including notable clients like Volvo Car Corporation and Illumina Inc. He has successfully tried cases before the International Trade Commission and argued before the United States Federal Circuit Court of Appeal and other Federal Appeals Courts. His appellate experience includes an en banc Ninth Circuit decision overturning two decades of precedent regarding anti-SLAPP motions and a published Ninth Circuit decision affirming a trial victory in a copyright and trademark infringement case for Classic Recreations.
Mr. Handal possesses significant experience with post-grant proceedings, having handled 17 PTAB Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs) and securing favorable Final Determinations in three of them. He is admitted to the State Bar of California (1984) and practices before various U.S. District Courts in California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the California Supreme Court. He earned his Juris Doctor from Southwestern University School of Law in 1982 and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1980.
