His notable case experience includes serving as of counsel for Maxell, Ltd. in Maxell, Ltd. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al., where Maxell initially secured a $111.7 million jury verdict for willful infringement of patents related to smart device technologies such as unlocking functions, locating recordings, and managing digital data. However, the federal court later overturned this verdict, granting Samsung's motion for judgment as a matter of law and invalidating claims in two of the asserted patents. As Lead Counsel, he represented defendants in APPLE, INC. v. Touchmusic Entertainment LLC, a patent infringement case filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and in Unified Patents PTAB Data v. Touchmusic Entertainment LLC. His experience also extends to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where he successfully represented a patent owner in Sprint v. General Access Solutions, Ltd., IPR2017-01889, defeating a challenge to patent validity concerning communication protocols for wireless access networks. Earlier in his career, he successfully defended Weyerhaeuser in an arbitration over a patent licensing dispute, where plaintiff's claims for $42 million were denied.

Dowell earned his B.S. in Interdisciplinary Engineering from Purdue University in 1989 and his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1994. He is admitted to practice in Illinois (1994) and Indiana (2003), and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, and various district courts.
